The Advice Sector Management & Leadership Development Hub

(the future of CJF Funder Plus)

With the support of the Legal Education Foundation and the AB Charitable Trust we will shortly be launching the Advice Sector Management and Development Hub in partnership with LAPG.

The aims of the hub are:

  1. To work with sector umbrella organisations and funders in order to provide management, leadership and governance training and support to specialist advice agencies with a view to increasing knowledge and improving the quality (and quantity) of effective management and governance
  2. To help create a management network and clear career path across the specialist advice sector.
  3. To ensure the availability and accessibility of expert consultancy support both in terms of organisational and sector sustainability but also in terms of innovation and growth.

Creating a training and management hub will mean that the sector has a standing resource that can be accessed at times of crisis but also where additional resource is needed to help grow organisations, grow projects and even evaluate and start new organisations. Our hope is that this will evolve into a Management & Leadership Academy.

The Hub will consist of the following workstreams:

  • An ongoing Management & Leadership Training Programme for up to 24 participants per year
  • Development of an online Introduction to Management Course (a 1-day course for those considering management or stepping into junior management roles like team leadership)
  • Development of an alumni programme for the MLP and the creation of a managers network along with the development and coordination of an ongoing peer to peer support programme along with action learning sets, mentoring, shared learning etc.
  • Partnership with the umbrella groups and the Network for Justice to bring together existing resources in a coordinated and available way
  • A expert consultancy offering, whether directly requested by agencies / grantees; or associated with the MLP (identified as a need during the course); or at funder request; or at umbrella body request

Further information on the Hub will be available shortly. In the meantime if you have any questions please contact Matt Howgate at:

Organisational Support Programme ‘Funder Plus’

We recognise that the people and organisations working in the advice sector face huge pressures. Through grant-making, the Community Justice Fund (CJF) seeks to ease current financial pressures, but we are conscious that additional types of support can help to consolidate the impact of grants.

We developed an Organisational Support Programme for organisations funded by the CJF. It was a holistic package which included:

  • management and leadership training;
  • expert consultancy support; and
  • small grants to help free up the time necessary to engage fully in these activities.

The training and consultancy was delivered during 2020 and 2021.
